Frequently Asked Questions:

1- How many hours will I need to do to pass my test?

The official DVSA answer would be 40-60hrs on average, combining professional driving tuition with private practice. This is rather misleading as it depends very much on the individual, their age and ability to learn. Taking account of: How quickly you learn, how often you are taught, the length of your lessons, and the regularity of the practice you get.

Below you can find a chart to give you an indicator as to how many hours it is likely to take you (please note this chart is a rough guide based on averages and should not be taken as a guarantee):

2- What will I need to bring to my first lesson?

Please bring your provisional license and a printed track record book (available below). If you require glasses to read number plates, please bring them with you as well.

3- Can I learn in an Automatic?

Yes – We offer Automatic driving lessons; if you learn to drive and pass your test in an Automatic car you will be licensed to drive an Automatic car. Should you wish to drive a manual vehicle you simply have to take and pass a driving test in a manual vehicle. No theory test would be required for this second driving test.

4- Do I need to pass my Theory Test before I have driving lessons?

The Practical and Theory Tests are an arrangement between you and the DVSA. Darz Driving School can book either Test for you and are happy to provide this service for a small fee. This also reduces the chance of you booking a test when your instructor is not available (perhaps already booked on test with another pupil). See our book online section for current test prices.

5- Will I need to book my Practical & Theory Tests myself?

The Practical and Theory Tests are an arrangement between you and the DVSA. Darz Driving School can book either Test for you and are happy to provide this service for a small fee. This also reduces the chance of you booking a test when your instructor is not available (perhaps already booked on test with another pupil). See our book online section for current test prices.

6- What do I need to take to my Theory Test?

You will need both parts of your photo license, or your license and a passport if you have an old paper license. You will also need the letter the DVSA sent inviting you to your test. Do not forget these, as no license, means no Test!

7- What do I need to take to my Practical Test?

You will need both parts of your photo license, or your license and another form of ID if you have an old paper license. You will also need the letter the DVSA sent inviting you to your test and bring along your Theory Pass Certificate. Do not forget these, as no license, mean no Test!

8- What do I need before I can learn to drive?

You must acquire a provisional license. You can apply for a provisional license at the post office by filling in a D1 form and sending it along with the relevant documents to the DVLA.

9-How often should I have lessons?

The essential question is how regularly should I have lessons? Whatever your preferred lesson duration it is less important than keeping up regular practice. If you foresee a period where you will not be able to take lessons other than a regular holiday break, you should perhaps consider delaying the start of lessons until you can commit to a weekly lesson. Lesson formats are: 1, 1.5 or 2 hours. We can advise what may be best for you, as from very remote rural locations a 1 hour lesson will not be adequate.

10- Can I book a two-hour lesson?

Yes. And they are recommended for a variety of reasons:

From remote locations they are essential. They give you time to practice not only a new subject but subjects previously covered. When you first start they enable you to carry on past a 1 hour lesson and you will benefit from the longer duration when learning to use the pedals and hand controls. They also help in the final stages of preparation for test, enabling you to practice junctions, manoeuvres, dual carriageway driving and country lanes, a more all-round driving lesson.

11- It is a present – can I book a block of lessons in one go?

Yes, of course you can book a block, in fact, pay in advance and you can receive a discount price. We also do gift vouchers, which are designed for any special occasion you request.

12- Can I be collected from or dropped to a different address other than my home?

Yes within reason, we are happy to collect you from another address than your home and again at the end of your lesson drop you somewhere else if you prefer. All we ask is advance notice as we would not want to be late for the next pupil’s lesson.

13- Do lessons in the evenings and at weekends cost the same?

This is subject to the individual Instructor’s discretion. Lessons ending at 7pm weekdays would be priced within the school’s price list. Late evening lessons may incur a surcharge and would certainly be surcharged if starting later than 9pm.

Saturday lessons before 5pm fall within the school’s price list again later lessons may attract a surcharge. Sunday lessons may attract a surcharge.

Quite simply in our experience instructors that work all hours for a set fee irrespective of day or time may not be as highly qualified and therefore do not feel confident in charging a little extra for unsocial hours.

14- Where do I take my Theory Test?

There are Theory Test centres located all over the UK run by the DVSA. You can discuss with your instructor which is best for you. You may wish to take a Theory Test near where you work saving you having to take a day off.

15- What are the average waiting times for a test?

For a Theory Test locally it is presently 2-3 weeks. For a Practical Driving Test it is approx. 5 weeks. This does vary from week to week. Turn-2-Us always have the latest available information.

16- Will I use the car I learn in to take my test?

Yes, you will take the test in your training car.

17- I am being taught by friends or family and I am not sure if I am ready to take my Test. Can you offer a Mock Test?

Yes, This can be easily arranged and is to be recommended. You can experience how it feels to have your driving assessed by an instructor who will conduct your test to a standard similar to DVSA Examiners. We may not be examiners but we prepare pupils for examiners to assess.

18- Do you do intensive courses?

Yes we offer full 10 ten day intensives & fast track courses over a longer duration. Click here for more information.

19- Do you offer refresher lessons?

If you have already passed your test and would like to brush up on your skills, we can offer a short refresher course. This will be subject to our confidence training rate, in our experience these courses range from as little as 2 hours through to “as many as you need to feel confident driving”. You do not need to take a test and will generally know when you do not require our help any longer. We have helped with motorway tuition, parking, and changing vehicle from manual to automatic (or vice versa). In addition to this we offer courses for people that have not driven for many years who want to brush-up their driving skills before taking to the roads again on their own. Please contact the school for details and to discuss your requirements.

20- If I feel unwell can I cancel my lesson?

You must be medically fit to drive. Even a common cold could make it unsafe for you to drive. Darz Driving School put safety over business and would not ask you to drive if you feel unwell. Discuss it with us and we can rearrange your lesson for when you are well again. Jet-lag after a long haul flight from holiday can affect driving so take that into account when arranging a lesson after holiday.
